Brown, Ward, Hemsky Named NHL's 'Three Stars'

Los Angeles Kings left wing Dustin Brown, Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward and Edmonton Oilers right wing Ales Hemsky have been named the NHL's 'Three Stars' for the week ending Jan.25. FIRST STAR -- DUSTIN BROWN, LW, LOS ANGELES KINGS Brown scored the game-winning goal in consecutive road games, helping the Kings (19-20-7, 45 points) move within six points of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. He tallied the game-winner, posted a +3 rating and was named the game's first star in a 5-2 victory at Minnesota Jan. 20 and notched the winner, an assist and a +1 rating in a 6-5 win at Colorado Jan. 21. The Kings captain completed the week by making his first career NHL All-Star Game appearance Sunday at Montreal, posting an assist for the Western Conference in a 12-11 shootout loss to the Eastern Conference. SECOND STAR -- CAM WARD, G, CAROLINA HURRICANES Ward stopped 67 of 68 shots in posting road victories on consecutive nights, lifting the Hurricanes (23-20-5, 51 points) to the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference entering the All-Star break. He stopped 35 shots in recording his second shutout of the season and eighth of his NHL career in a 2-0 victory at Toronto Jan. 19 and made 32 saves in a 2-1 victory at Pittsburgh Jan. 20. Ward improved his season record to 18-14-3 with a 2.57 goals-against average and .911 save percentage in 36 appearances. THIRD STAR -- ALES HEMSKY, RW, EDMONTON OILERS Hemsky thoroughly dominated his lone game last week, recording two goals and two assists -- including the game-winning goal with 34.9 seconds remaining in regulation time -- in the Oilers' 4-3 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets Jan. 20. He posted a +2 rating and was named the game's first star. The victory was the Oilers' fifth in six games and improved their record to 24-19-3, sixth in the Western Conference. "That was unreal, I haven't seen anything like that in a while," Oilers head coach Craig MacTavish said of Hemsky's performance. "Two goals and two assists. We've seen that before. But not where all four are world-class plays."

Ryan Smyth and Milan Hejduk scored their 300th career goals in the Avalanche?s 6-2 win over the Flames on Sunday night, becoming just the second set of players in NHL history to reach the milestone in the same game, according to an Associated Press report.

Oilers To Retire Anderson's No. 9 Jersey

The Oilers will raise Glenn Anderson?s No. 9 jersey to the rafters prior to Sunday?s game against the Coyotes, as reported by Yahoo.com. Anderson won five Stanley Cups from 1984-90 with the Oilers. He captured another championship with the Rangers in 1994.

Colorado Avalanche left wing Wojtek Wolski, Anaheim Ducks right wing Bobby Ryan and Florida Panthers center Gregory Campbell have been named the NHL's 'Three Stars' for the week ending Jan. 11. Wolski led all NHL scorers last week with six points (four goals, two assists), including two game-winning goals, as the Avalanche (22-19-1, 45 points) went 3-0-0 and moved into the eighth and final playoff spot in the tight Western Conference race. Wolski tallied both Colorado goals in a 2-1 victory over the Nashville Predators Jan. 6, notched the game-winning goal and added an assist in a 2-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks Jan. 8 and recorded two points (one goal, one assist) in a 5-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins Jan. 10. Playing in his third full NHL season, Wolski ranks fourth on the Avalanche in scoring with 25 points (11 goals, 14 assists) in 41 games. He also leads all NHL players in shootout goals (six) and shootout scoring percentage (six goals in seven attempts, 85.7%). Ryan led all goal-scorers for the week with five, highlighted by his first career NHL hat trick in a 4-3 loss at Los Angeles Jan. 8. The 21-year-old Cherry Hill, N.J. native became the first rookie in Ducks history to record a hat trick and his three goals in a 2:21 span marked the fastest three goals by an NHL rookie since 1938 (Detroit?s Carl Liscombe, vs. Chicago on March 13, 1938, 1:52). Ryan also scored once each in Anaheim victories over the Kings (3-1, Jan. 6) and New Jersey Devils (4-3, Jan. 11). Since his season debut Nov. 16, Ryan leads all NHL rookies in scoring with 26 points (12 goals, 14 assists) in 26 games and has climbed to fourth in the overall rookie scoring race. Campbell recorded six points (two goals, four assists) and posted a +6 rating as the Panthers (20-16-6, 46 points) won three consecutive games and closed within one point of a playoff berth in the Eastern Conference. He began the week by recording one goal and one assist in a 4-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs Jan 6, notched one goal in a 4-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes Jan. 8 and registered three assists in an 8-4 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers Jan. 10. Campbell already has set NHL single-season highs in goals (eight) and points (20), ranking fifth on the Panthers in scoring.

Jackets' Nash Named NHL's 'First Star'

Columbus Blue Jackets left wing Rick Nash has been named the National Hockey League?s First Star for the week of Dec. 29, 2008-Jan. 4, 2009, the club and league announced today. Nash tallied two goals and seven assists for nine points to lead all league scorers and help the Blue Jackets post a 3-1-0 record in four road games. He also fired off 12 shots on goal, had a +7 plus/minus rating and averaged over 20:00 of ice time per game. In addition to Nash, Detroit defenseman Brian Rafalski and Carolina goaltender Cam Ward were named second and third star, respectively. Nash began the week by tallying 1-1-2, was +1 and assisted on the game-winning goal in a 2-0 win at Los Angeles on December 29. He added 0-1-1, two shots, was +1 and logged 25:49 of ice time in a 2-0 win at Anaheim on December 31. At Colorado on Jan. 2, he matched his career high with 1-3-4, fired off four shots and was +4 in a 6-1 win. His first career penalty shot goal against Avalanche goaltender Peter Budaj was also the game-winner. He wrapped up the week by assisting on both Columbus goals and firing off five shots in a 5-2 loss at St. Louis on January 3. The three-time All-Star leads Columbus in goals, assists and points with 17-22-39 in 39 games. He has also scored a team-high four game-winning goals, has a +9 plus/minus rating and is currently riding a five-game point streak as he has collected 2-8-10 during that time.
